As usual, Mike isn’t holding back.
Lower Than Atlantis frontman Mike Duce joined us on the Rock Sound Podcast this week and it was as honest, hilarious and brilliant as you’d expect.
Here are some highlights, including an AMAZING story about upcoming tour supports Boston Manor…
YOU’RE HEADING OFF ON A CLUB TOUR IN APRIL AND PLAYING VENUES FROM THE EARLY LTA DAYS, WHAT WAS THE DECISION BEHIND THAT?
Says Mike: “We enjoy the bigger shows, it’s a whole different kettle of fish, obviously there’s more people and you can have production, which is great. But we have a lot of fun still playing smaller shows, like club shows.
“There’s nothing to hide behind then, no bangs and flashes or anything, it’s just four blokes playing rock music. That’s where we cut our teeth and it’s kinda more us as people, we’re just dirty, gritty guys – I don’t know!
“Back in the day when we started off, we would tour for months round the UK. Trust me, it’s possible! We’d book the shows through MySpace and some nights there’d be like three people there or less and then other times there’d be like 100 people and it was really fun.
“It was very unpredictable, so we’re trying to do that again I guess, re-create that.”
IS THIS A WAY TO GENUINELY HAVE FUN AGAIN ON THE ROAD?
“Yeah definitely. We’re playing some older songs, some songs that we haven’t played in a while, especially for the YouTube commenters!
“We just felt that those [support] bands are similar to the music that we used to make, so I guess it just all fit that way.
“Funny story about Boston Manor by the way… I’ve since met the bloke, but about five years ago, I was standing outside a pub at Watford Junction having a cigarette and this car came screeching up, pulled up onto the footpath in front of me and this bloke got out in front of me and was like, ‘It’s you! I knew I’d see you today! It’s you!’ and he gave me a CD and said, ‘This is my band, check it out’ and I think I actually lost it because I went out that night!
“But it turns out it was a Boston Manor CD and it was one of the blokes from Boston Manor who’d gone to Harry Potter World with his girlfriend. A better story would’ve been he gave me the CD, I listened to it and that’s why we’re taking them on tour… I probably should’ve lied, shouldn’t I!”
DID YOU WANT TO REVISIT SOME OF THAT OLDER STUFF?
“When the self-titled album came out a lot of people thought we were a new band, like a LOT of people, so for a long time we had to mainly play those songs.
“And then obviously we released ‘Safe In Sound’ after that and we had to showcase a lot of that material and I feel like the ‘World Record’ and ‘Far Q’ stuff got pushed back a bit, which I thought was a shame.
“Also man, that double-time, punk beat stuff in bigger venues sounds turd! It doesn’t come across at all, those songs were written for smaller venues, hence another reason why we’re going back and doing them.”
