It makes so much sense.
Ultra violet, Pantone‘s Color of the Year for 2018, might not be as pervasive in menswear right now as, say, millennial pink or safety orange. You might not own even one single item in the color. But that doesn’t mean this psychedelic hue hasn’t been slowly creeping into the style consciousness recently. Ultra violet might “point toward the future”, according to Pantone, but there have been too many purple style moments in 2017 to call its status a coincidence. Here’s a look at the weird and wonderful places we spotted it. Maybe it’s time you invested in a purple hoodie or pair of kicks?
January 2017: Jeep’s 2017 Wangler is available in a limited edition “Xtreme Purple”. It’s perfect for Prince mega-fans and rich teens.
February 2017: Purple jackets of all varieties pop up at the menswear shows during New York Fashion Week. Ralph Lauren, Raf Simons, John Elliott, are just a few of the designers behind the trend.
March 2017: The New Balance x Concepts 990CPT2 “Tyrian” sneakers hit shelves. They’re a purple suede spin on the New Balance 990 and they are very royal.
July 2017: Leonardo DiCaprio took his lazy-day style to another level, using a purple plastic bag as a makeshift fanny pack.
August 2017: Tyler, the Creator’s Converse One Star collaboration drops. Purple suede is one colors in the collection. Maybe the best one?
August 2017: Conor McGregor wears a purple three-piece suit to a “press conference” with Floyd Mayweather ahead of their historic fight.
September 2017: Donald Glover’s purple Gucci tux kills at the Emmy Awards. The actor took home two awards and landed at the top of our best-dressed list.
October 2017: The Nike Zoom Fly SP gives us the feels. We called the tan and purple combo made for the Chicago Marathon the most “underrated” in the lineup.
November 2017: Stranger Things fans crashed a museum’s website trying to buy Dustin’s purple dinosaur hoodie. They made over $60,000 in sales off the merch.
Hey purple, you earned it!
