The dark lord of fashion has an unexpected collab.
Sometimes the coolest fashion collaborations can come from the oddest of places. Case in point: Rick Owens and Birkenstock are teaming up. While the pairing of a legacy German comfort-footwear label and the dark lord of futuristic fashion seems unlikely on paper, it all starts to make sense when you consider the sheer power of Owens himself. Everything he touches turns to gold—or black, rather, preferably in concrete. What brand wouldn’t want a little bit of that hyper-stylish, ninja-goth magic?
The multidisciplinary designer has reimagined three classic Birkenstock styles using a variety of fabrics, including full-grain leather, felt, and pony hair. If the teaser is any indicator, and knowing Owens’ favorite color palette, you can expect lots of dark monochromatic shades. In addition to the limited-edition kicks, there will also be a traveling mobile pop-up space that will appear at the Los Angeles Rick Owens store in March. Dubbed the “Birkenstock Box,” it’ll include more sandals and shoes from the brand’s main line alongside select Rick Owens clothing and accessories.
The best fashion collaborations come from these type of “opposites attract” pairings. Just look to last year’s uptown-meets-downtown collab from Louis Vuitton and Supreme that broke the internet hype machine. The partnership between Birkenstock and Rick Owens is perfect given the ugly-is-trendy aesthetic that has been running rampant through the world of high fashion. The unfashionably fashionable look is inescapable these days: bulky sneakers, pleated pants, dad-like jackets, Crocs—you name it. Birkenstock has always been known for walking the line between being cool and uncool, and an injection of Owen’s trademark underworldly vibe is all takes to tip the scales in the right direction. Expect to see to see plenty of fashion freaks, stylish goths, and hypebeasts wearing Birks later this year.
Rick Owens x Birkenstock will be available for pre-order on March 1 and for purchase via Rick Owens and Birkenstock on March 15.
