T-Shirt Tuesday: The Best Harry Potter Shirts

Back in the days of geek prehistory, a T-shirt was a signal to the world around you that you cared about your nerdy pursuits enough to fly them like a flag. Companies like Graphitti Designs contracted with movie studios and comics publishers to create shirts with our favorite characters and sold them up on the walls of comic book stores and through mail-order.

The computer revolution has enabled the T-shirt world to become something totally new – affordable production and distribution means that shirts can be printed in small quantities and sold anywhere in the world. Starting with Threadless, dozens of companies popped up letting artists and designers show their stuff. It’s a better time than ever to be a geek fashionista, and if you’re looking to expand your wardrobe we’re going to help you out every week… on T-Shirt Tuesday.

This week: Head on back to Hogwarts with some Harry Potter duds, no matter what house you get sorted into.

Starry School

Starry School

When we first laid eyes on this design by ddjvigo it took a second to get over it. What a great idea! Fusing one of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings with the approach to Hogwarts by water creates a compelling visual that sucks you in the longer you look at it. And it’s executed with just a few colors – a real triumph of clever design and illustrative skill. What a great way to start off this article.

Free Elf

Free Elf

Dobby the house elf is one of our favorite Harry Potter supporting characters, a relentlessly cheerful little fellow who is bound into servitude to the malevolent Snape until Harry tricks him into giving away a pair of his socks, which voids the contract. Artist ppmid depicts the tender scene when Dobby won his freedom in an appealing big-headed cartoon style. And look at the smile on that sock!

Book Of Fantasy

Book Of Fantasy

Really lovely illustrative work by DANDINGEROZZ on this shirt – it takes some of the most important iconography from the Harry Potter series and arranges it in a compelling and vivid manner. There’s a lot of motion and depth in this drawing, making it definitely stand out from the pack. Cool color choices as well.

Deathly Impossible Hallows

Deathly Impossible Hallows

The Harry Potter franchise has some pretty cool visual symbols, but one of our favorites is the circle inside a bisected triangle that represents the story of the Three Brothers from the tales of Beedle the Bard. Each brother obtained one of the three Hallows – the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility – and their symbols combined make this mark. Artist RetroReview takes the basic shape and gives it an optical illusion twist.

Time Turner

Time Turner

Of all the magical gimcracks and gadgets in the Harry Potter universe, the one that we’d most like to get our hands on is the Time Turner. As used by Hermoine Granger, it allowed her to increase her cram sessions to take more classes, but let’s be frank: we’d use it for considerably less nerdy ends. Artist BeaverDesigns7 gives us a slick, iconic rendition of the history-warping device.

Always

Always

Severus Snape is one of the most complex and fascinating characters in the book – a villain, true, but one who is motivated by deeper hurts and history than most. His crowning moment comes in The Deathly Hallows when he reveals his Patronus to Harry and his friends and it’s the same as Lily Potter’s, a bond that has never died despite all of Snape’s evil deeds. Artist demonigote delivers a powerful portrait of the master wizard.

The Comprehensive Harry Potter

The Comprehensive Harry Potter

A popular genre of geek T-shirt is the agglomeration of a bunch of icons that represent the franchise into a silhouette, challenging observers to test their knowledge by identifying them all. One of the best we’ve seen in recent weeks is arwittrup‘s Harry Potter lightning bold composed of dozens of wee icons, including brooms, wands, spectacles and more. How’d you do?

Boo, You Horcrux

Boo, You Horcrux

Never in a million years would we have thought of mashing up Mean Girls and Harry Potter, but we’re not geniuses like FandomFeelsPH07, obviously. It’s fair to say that Draco Malfoy probably kept a burn book or two, and we dig the hot pink calligraphy on display here. If you’re a fan of both franchises this shirt is a must-buy.

The Pretendus Charm

The Pretendus Charm

In Harry Potter lore, the Patronus is a mystical animal that appears to protect a wizard in danger of attack from a Dementor. But what if you’re a mischevious young boy with a big imagination? Well, then you get a Pretendus – in the case of this cute mash-up shirt by djkopet, it’s a puzzled-looking tiger decked out with a pair of antlers.

Hermione The Conqueror

Hermione The Conqueror

What if Harry and Neville Longbottom had perished before they vanquished Voldemort? Well, if you believe Razwit, Hermoine would have found a way to save the wizarding world. Based on an iconic Conan painting by fantasy master Frank Frazetta, this lushly illustrated shirt shows us an older, weary Hermoine who stands triumphant with the aid of a Time Tuner and all of her magical abilities.

Death Eaters

Death Eaters

It’s fair to say that Lord Voldemort is one of the most purely metal antagonists in all of fantasy literature. You’re not even supposed to say his name, for God’s sake! Artist Baz renders Tom Riddle’s noseless face in the style typically reserved for T-shirts worn by hardcore heshers who hang out behind the convenience store pounding down domestic beer and blowing out their eardrums with their car stereos.
